Education

In countries like Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, and many others, there is a significant lack of access to education for children. The economic situations in these communities is often dire, with having extremely poor systems in place, leading to very high illiteracy rates.

Salam Charity is working towards tackling this issue by providing access to education for children in these regions, affording them their basic rights, as well as enabling them to become more self-sufficient and contributors to their communities.

Education For All…

We have identified lack of education as one of the key factors keeping children in the grips of poverty. We have responded by researching the ideal methods of education programming and the social and economic state of children in the camp. In certain cases, children as young as 6 years old are the main bread winner of the family, providing food and support to their entire households.

Rohingya Educational Programs…

As refugees continue to flood into the already overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazaar, we are left wondering what is going to happen to the thousands of children who were born in the camps themselves. Will they have to endure the hardships and suffering that their parents went through to get them here? Will they be able to live a life free of poverty and confidently grow to adulthood?

There are an estimated 10,000 children that were born in the camps and they know no other life than this. This is what they were born into and unless we do something to make a real change, this is what they will continue to live in.

We can’t stress enough the importance of education, and as such, our programs are aimed at teaching basic literacy and numeracy to children between the ages of 5-11. Furthermore, all classes are held in the evenings to allow children to continue working if they need to, and food is also provided to the children who attend.

Education For All…

Education is a basic human right, a powerful instrument for change and critical for Pakistan’s growth and prosperity. Yet millions of children – mainly girls – are engaged in child labour and being denied their right to learn, to thrive and to reach their full potential. Salam Charity has identified this as a critical area of focus for the organization, and aims to deliver programs for children across the country.

Across Pakistan, millions of boys and girls are being denied their right to an education.

Pakistan has one of the poorest education systems in the world, the second highest out-of-school rate in the world and third highest illiteracy rate. Sadly, the majority of out of school children are girls, while two thirds of the adult illiterate population is female.

Although the constitution of Pakistan stats that every child has the right to free and compulsory education, this is not the reality. Due to poverty and cultural beliefs, families prioritize additional income over education, sending their children out to work, rather than to school, and families prioritize sending their sons to school over their daughters.

Salam Charity has partnered with Shahid Afridi Foundation to establish a number of schools and support existing schools with its infrastructure and operational needs.
