Yemen: A country in crisis

Half the population live on less than $2.50 a day
The Global Hunger Index indicates an alarming rate of food insecurity.

Yemen is facing catastrophe beyond anything that we can imagine. The ongoing war has killed thousands of innocent civilians and famine has caused an alarming rate of food insecurity, especially among children.

Nearly half of the population lives on less than three dollars a day and social development indicators, such as child malnutrition, maternal mortality and educational attainment, remain extremely poor.

Yemen is also the most food insecure country in the Arab world and is amongst the top 10 least food secure countries globally. The 2014 Global Hunger Index ranks Yemen 73 out of 81 countries analysed, indicating an “alarming” level of food insecurity. Nevertheless, the 2014 Global Hunger Index was based on data extracted from previous years and does not take into consideration the impact of the 2015 Coalition war under the leadership of Saudi Arabia.

The on-going conflict has negatively impacted access to food for millions of vulnerable people. Supply of essential food items has been severely limited, leading to an exhorbitant rise in the prices of these basic items and other basic commodities. This is further complicated by a decline in purchasing power for the Yemeni people, linked to the steep devaluation of the Yemeni Riyal. Inadequate nutrition coupled with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare services can lead to increased morbidity, especially for children. The continuous rise in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is only exacerbating an already very severe situation.

We have several projects in Yemen including food, shelter, water and education initiatives. You can make a real difference in the lives of those living through horrendous conditions by donating and supporting these programs.

  • $60 can buy a nutritious food pack for a family of 5 for a whole month
  • $2000 can dig a deep well providing life saving water
  • $50 can provide a child with warm winter clothing
  • $60 child sponsorship will help a child with education, food and clothing
